Stimme des Herzen

eng: Whisper of the Heart

jp: Mimi wo Sumaseba (耳をすませば)

Better PR

The leader of the opposition party, Sam Rainsy, was recently arrested for removing border posts on the Cambodia-Vietnam border. The concern is that Vietnam was encroaching on Cambodian territory in secret, which is not uncommon in territorial dispute. Just earlier, Thai nationalist were arrested for attempting to alter the Cambodia-Thailand border post. Of course, let us remember that this whole border dispute is a product of colonialism. Prior, there was NO border definition amongst any of the states of Southeast Asia.
Well, Sam Rainsy is objecting that they are unfairly prosecuted and have evidence for their claim. They can rightfully claim so, since the government is riddle with lobbyist corruption. Ah, but Sam Rainsy isn't going to get by with just a prosecution claim. The problem is that the opposition is party is riddled with racist agenda. I don't disagree that the current government is a foreign sale out. Any educated Cambodian will know that Hun Sen is an eleitist power hungery brown-noser who follows the beckoning of the more powerful East Asian states. But what exactly do want to replace him with. Racist war-mongers aren't exactly an ideal candidate, yet that's exactly what Sam Rainsy has been portraying themselves to be. Ay, the whole issue of ethnic relations in post-colonial Southeast Asia could fill volumes and the Viet-Khmer relationship is just a part of that. Presenting yourself as racist isn't going to help your cause, especially for a country whose trying to get recognized by the international community. Yeah the Viets are stilling Khmer lands, but hey the Javanese are taking the Papauans' lands, the Burmese taking the Kayins' land. Don't claim your the only ones. Yes it is noble (to the extant that you believe in the nation state system) to guard your border, but bringing racism into it makes you no better than the enemies who probably considers you barbarians likewise (see pot kettle black).

Dried Persimmons

Persimmons are one of my favorite fruits because are sweet but not too sweet. Dried Persimmons are awesome. It's nearing the celebration of the Lunar new years in Chinese and Vietnamese culture (I think Korean too, not sure. I know that Japan has abandon it's lunar calender for the solar one.) So that means that there are much dried persimmons to be had, not that you couldn't buy them all year round of course.

Dirty lol

入+肉=肏
To Enter + Flesh/Meat = Fuck
lolz.
As you can see, the first radical (enter) is placed above the second radical (meat). Now lets all prove Freud right and read into this like crazy. lol
Most Chinese characters are formed by two or more radicals. It is often the case that one of these radicals offer a hint to the meaning while the other hints at the sound. This sounds fine, but as with all language Chinese has greatly change with the modern dialects no longer resembling the original pronouncation. For that reason, scholars have used the dialects, as well as Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese (since they significantly borrowed Chinese characters and words despite being linguistically unrelated to Chinese) to construct Classical spoken Chinese which can help to understand language change as well as changes in the sound of a character.

In this case the first radical is rù in modern Mandarin, jap6 in Cantonese, nhập in Vietnamese, ip in Korean, and ju in Japanese. It is likely the case that in past they would have been one sound and diverge. The second radical is ròu in Mandarin, yuk6 in Cantonese, nhục in Vietnamese, yuk in Korean, and niku in Japanese. Here it is reasonable to say that there may have been an avelor stop as as a stop for that syllable (k/g). Of course, I'm not a linguist major but it's fun to speculate and learn. The new word is cào/chaau3, which is a slang in Chinese.

So anyway, that was random.

*All romanized Mandarin, Cantonese, and Korean words are in Pinyin, Jyutping, and Revised Romanization respectful. You may also see them in Wade-Giles, Yale, and McCune-Reischauer respectivly. Vietnamese employs their own script while Japanese uses their standard Romaji.

BTW, hot guy below:

Ratanakiri

So, I hear on the Phnom Penh Post that there has been tension between ethnic minorities in Ratanakiri and large timber companies. Considering the trend of ethnic rivalry in SEA, it shouldn't be a surprise. Still, I had hope (perhaps naively) that Cambodia's relation with it's ethnic minorities would be different. Especially since they share a history of genocide with each other. But alas, political and economic power wins out. It's not bad enough that logging in R'kiri has become server over the years. Now they are beginning to push the ethnic minorities there off their tribal land. (This should sound familiar to any American.)

Faith before Morals

If you all don't know, I'm a frequent commenter on Pharyngula, a blog headed by the self-proclaimed godless-liberal-biologist PZ. Now, I don't agree with PZ 100%. To be honest, there are times where I'm a tad bit accommodating. But I'm also not one for malicious slander. No sooner when PZ criticize missionary efforts in Haiti, an apologetic comes in spitting nonsense that this was somehow spewing hate. Professor Dendy of American River College in Sacramento, comes in a claims PZ is hate mongering. Why? Because PZ doesn't believe that giving electronic Bibles to Haitians is productive. So naturally, the commenters point out that he is utterly wrong, in which he claims persecution. He makes a dramatic exit and leaves us a link to his blog, claiming that the commenters a lying.
Well lets analyze the situation here. Dendy came in claiming PZ is spitting hateful venom, which is completely off topic and has no evidence to support. Commenters says WTF. He then claim that the death of the Haitians is God's plan and gives an anecdote about how he survived a life-threatening disease. Then he claims we're hatemongers (for which he only gives Raven, a ex-Christian, as an example). He leaves us with a link to his blog, but the blog doesn't link back to PZ. So he's lying, overacting, and dishonest. Lying because he made a false claim about hatemonger. Overacting because as soon as we criticize him, he claims persecution. Dishonest because he doesn't link back to the thread so that readers can see for themselves the actual occurrence.
People like Dendy scares me. Dendy is a professor, and is in a position of power to influence other. When such dishonest person has that power, they abuse it and distort the truth. I feel sorry for whatever student has him.

Never!

PeeZeed has posted what appears to be an attempt to replace pokemon with more scientifically accurate animals. Bah NEVER! Pikachu lives!

Let's do this!

I'm so happy that I helped set up a school donation effort to help with the aftermath of the recent Haitian earthquake. I want to remind everyone who reads this blog that send help is a good thing. It doesn't matter what your faith is or what your ethnicity is, your fellow humans are in need of help. Please support something. (Choose Doctors without Borders lol)

Oh crap for men with RLS

Via Scienceblog

A study in the Jan. 1 issue of the journal Sleep shows that erectile dysfunction
was more common in older men with restless leg syndrome (RLS) than in those
without RLS, and the magnitude of this association increased with a higher
frequency of RLS symptoms.
Results show that erectile dysfunction was 16
percent more likely in men with RLS symptoms that occur five to 14 times per
month (odds ratio of 1.16) and 78 percent more likely in men whose RLS symptoms
occur 15 or more times a month (OR=1.78). The associations were independent of
age, body mass index, use of antidepressants, anxiety and other possible risk
factors for RLS. Fifty-three percent of RLS patients and 40 percent of
participants without RLS reported having erectile dysfunction, which was defined
as a poor or very poor ability to have and maintain an erection sufficient for
intercourse.
The results suggest it is likely that the two disorders share
common mechanisms, said lead author Xiang Gao, MD, PhD, instructor at Harvard
Medical School, associate epidemiologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital and
research scientist at the Harvard School of public health in Boston, Mass.

Well I guess my new year resolution is to stop my RLS, less I want to pop blue pills when I'm older.

Workout of the day

Dumbbell Row
Okay, there are many methods for doing this. You can assume the push-up position or place your knee and adjacent arm on a bench. Either way, begin to lift the dumbbell by bending your elbows and moving yours shoulder and don't use your torso.

Workout of the day

Goblet Squat
Grab the end of a dumbbell with both hands and place it in front your chest. (It should be vertical.) Feet should be slightly beyond should length. Keep back arched. Now squat! Push your hip back and bend you're knees. If it's hard, try doing without a dumbbell. It's one of those awesome burns that feels satisfying (and sore.)

Bashing His Majesty

This past Christmas was spent with the relatives. Usually, there was karaoke, beer, food, and political talks on Cambodia. I didn't listen in much, mostly because I've heard them all and much of it was unverifiable. Nonetheless, I did catch a few words about His Majesty, Norodom Sihamoni. It wasn't good words.

Now before anyone state it, I'm not condemning negative talks against a Monarchy. I am very opposed to Thai laws restricting criticism of Royalties because it prevents any true freedom of speech. However, I will criticise nay-sayers of His Majesty. Not because I don't want people disrespecting the king, but rather because people refuse to disrespect the actual problem - the prime minister. This is Cambodia's own version of censorship. Since criticising the PM is dangerous, people deflect it on His Majesty. They say that HM lets so and so happens and isn't doing his job. Uh, hello? HM is just a figure head. The real power is with the PM, but no one outside of Cambodia has the guts to say it. (Surely, plenty of Khmer journalist based in the U.S. do, but I find their integrity rather faulty and often rather racist.)

So why are people criticising the king? Well duh he's an easy target. Sihamoni doesn't have the level of respect from Cambodian that His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej has in Thailand. Sihamoni isn't feared like Hun Sen, so whenever Hun Sen's cabinet screws up, it's much easier to mitigate the blame on the King (even easier to mitigate on a lower authority, of course.) So, what's the problem? You've got to be real. Put the blame where it belongs, not on the easiest target (that's called scapegoating don'tcha know.)

Congee

In Khmer babar (no the elephant of course).

Depending on serving, us from 2 to 4 cups of white rice. Put double or more amount of water, depending on how liquid you want it.

You can put a multitude of yummy things in congee. I put chicken, parsley, chives, pepper, and salted soybeans. Also shredded pork is good too.

I can't think of an east Asian nation that doesn't serve conjee. I remember getting it even on EVA Air on my way to Taiwan. (I didn't enjoy it because I was afraid of dying on the whole trip there.) Some of the best conjee I've eaten are Korean and Cambodian conjee which sometimes use ingredients that would look weird in western food.

Father Forces "Gay" Son to Have Sex With a Prositute

Via Fridae:

"A local court says there is enough evidence against the father for him to stand
trial for the rape of his son.
Fearing that his 14-year-old son is gay, a
Rockhampton man thought that sex with a woman would "straighten" him out.
According to the Rockhampton Morning Bulletin on Wednesday, the father
allegedly phoned a prostitute during a family barbecue around Christmas time in
2007 and arranged to meet her at a local motel.
The unnamed man drove his
son to the motel and waited outside the room after demanding to see a used
condom as proof that the boy and the prostitute had sex."

Oh great. Homophobia at work again, and this time it's goes all out. There is so many thing wrong with this. Firstly, the father is a negligent arsehole. He could have risked giving his son so many diseases. Secondly, straight sex cannot "cure" homosexual attraction. Which brings me to the next point that he should have no fear of teh gehs. They's people too, and often very good moral people. Than again, I forget that keeping the status quo is far more important than human life and dignity.

Scene from Ramakien and random stuff

Okay, I'm not familiar with my Ramayana but I'm fairly sure that this is a Yak in disguised to lure Phra Ram. Okay people always say that Khmer and Thai lakorn are the same. It is true that both theatre are related with the Khmer version being the predecessor. However, there fundamental differences in the music and acting and plot all together.

Oh, I get more death threats from a certian crazy Canadian but he didn't figure I'd put my system on moderation. Which brings me to another note. I welcome most comments on here (even condencending ones) but I don't tolerate this type of insanity.
